The electrodynamics of a magnetic leviation coil is studied without the use of Maxwell's thin-plate approximation. Formulas are derived for the forces on and current fluctuation in a vertically perturbed coil and the transient response of a stationary coil in the vicinity of a permeable conducting track. All results are obtained from exact solutions of the Maxwell equations in which the displacement current is neglected. The forces are then linearized and a close coupling approximation for the reflected impedence of the coil is derived.
