Membranes of Staphylococcus aureus contain an enzyme which catalyzes the dephosphorylation of C55-isoprenoid alcohol phosphate. Some properties of this enzyme are described. The possibility is suggested that this phosphatase and a previously described C55-isoprenoid alcohol phosphokinase represent a mechanism for regulation of cell wall synthesis in S. aureus.
