In previous studies the present authors proposed a theory of drug abuse. This theory states that the amount of stress within an individual (Factor A) plus the amount of stress from the environment (Factor B) determines an individual's level of discomfort (LD). This level of discomfort subsequently is an accurate predictor of drug abuse. Our previous studies have dealt with the quantification of Factor A (internal stress) using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). This present study attempts to quantify Factor B (external stress) using Rahe's Recent Life Changes Questionnaire (RLCQ). Data was collected from 121 soldiers from various U.S. Army troop units in the Nuernberg area. Factors A and B were found to be separate measures, and Factor B, either alone or in combination with Factor A, was found to correlate with excessive drug use.
