Psychiatric screening may warrant consideration after open heart surgery; leaves open optimal interventions for modifiable factors.
Postoperative psychiatric complications are very common in open heart surgery. Very often the symptoms reach a psychotic level. It is quite clear that a psychiatric complication is the result of the combined effect of both psychological and organic factors. It is often very difficult to modify the organic factors, while the psychological factors can be modified relatively easily after they have been identified exactly. These are the conclusions of a team of authors from Uleåborg, Finland.
