In this paper, a mechanism of acoustic noise generation in hard disk drive (HDD) spindle motors is presented. Three parts are reviewed and analyzed here: (1) the characteristics of electromagnetic (EM) excitations, which are the major noise source in the motors; (2) the transmission of EM-induced vibrations to the motor exterior; and (3) the propagating vibration energy capable of converting to acoustic noise. Lastly, the approach to reduce the transmitted vibration energy by optimizing the interference fit between the stator and base assembly of the motor is experimentally investigated.
