Structural identification (St-Id) is a powerful tool that bridges the gap between constructed systems and the models used in their design and assessment. The use of advanced diagnostic tools, embedded sensors, and condition assessment is widespread in many other engineering applications, such as automobiles and aircraft. Structural identification (St-Id) serves an important role to bridge the gap between models used in design and the manufactured system in these applications by correlating these models with experimental observations/data and reliably assessing performance. St-Id can be viewed as a mechanical or civil engineering application of system identification (Sys-Id), with its origin in electrical engineering. The ASCE Structural Engineering Institute Performance of Structures Track has established a technical committee on 'Structural Identification (St-Id) of Constructed Systems' to explore its use in civil infrastructure.
