A study of immunoglobulins in 29 normal (17 community and 12 textile) subjects, 34 clinic patients and 74 abnormal textile workers, revealed a significant rise in IgG and a fall in IgD and IgM in the presence of work-related chest symptoms (byssinosis). The rise in IgE levels seemed more closely related to blood eosinophilia. There was no rise in IgG or E in textile workers with symptoms of ‘chronic bronchitis’. These data add further evidence that byssinosis may be distinct from chronic bronchitis.
