An equation is derived (see Eq. (10)) for the vertical variation of the amplitude of standing waves when the wind direction varies with height and the wave is periodic both in the x ‐ and y ‐directions. The equation is solved numerically for specified two‐ and three‐layer atmospheres to determine possible wavelengths in the x and y directions for lee‐waves. The lee‐wave pattern is calculated for an isolated hill in specified cases.
