A general feature of the eukaryotic nucleus is the presence of nucleoli. In favorable preparations the nucleoli appear as dense, spherical bodies; they are several times the diameter of a compact chromo-some and are located at specific chromosomal sites (McClintock, 1934; Dearing, 1934). The nucleoli can be seen throughout the cell cycle--except for the relatively brief period of mitosis. At this time the nucleoli apparently disperse, and the chromo-somal regions which they formerly occupied can be seen only as threadlike constrictions. The deter-mination of the structure and function of the nucleoli has been a task which has extended over many generations of scientists and methodologies. Early investigations began to elucidate a rela-
