The initial stages of the process of heterogeneous nucleation in the electrodeposition of mercury on a platinum single crystal electrode are studied in detail. It is found that the rate of nucleation is time‐dependent. The results are treated in terms of the theory of transient nucleation first formulated by Zeldovich. Induction times and steady state nucleation rates are evaluated from the experimental data.
