Extracellular H2O2-dependent ligninase activity of Phanerochaete chrysosporium was produced in agitated culture conditions when veratryl alcohol or veratraldehyde were added to the cultures. The enzyme production was suppressed by cycloheximide indicating that true protein synthesis occurred. The activated cultures were also able to degrade synthetic lignin. Reduction of veratraldehyde to corresponding alcohol during secondary metabolism was a good indicator of the effect of agitation on cell metabolism. Too high agitation speed led to complete inhibition of both the reduction reaction and the ligninolytic activity.
