The temporal characteristics of topic-elicited and picture-elicited speech were compared in 17 young school-age children. Of the 6 temporal measures only total number of pauses differentiated the two types of speech elicitation. The findings are in general agreement with earlier studies of temporal characteristics in adults but suggest that children pause more during speaking casks which demand more cognitive facility.
