Two stable free radicals are formed in glutaric acid crystals on x irradiation. Ultraviolet illumination preferentially destroys one of these. Detailed ESR measurements are presented for the remaining radical and both radicals are studied by the ENDOR technique. Procedures for recovering the hyperfine tensor from the ENDOR data are presented. The contributions of the SxIx and SyIy terms are calculated to second order in the perturbation. The angular dependence of the anisotropic β-proton hyperfine interaction is calculated, and the results are compared with the observed behavior.
