A study of the magnetic properties of a completely ordered Pt–Co single crystal indicates that, out of the three possible sets of crystallites, one has a population twice as large as each of the two others. This result can easily be interpreted in terms of a model of the distribution of the ordered crystallites leading to minimum strain energy. This model is presented and its experimental verification through x-ray and metallographic examination discussed.
