Methods of fitting tolerance ellipsoids to the J & P Coats and to the Davidson and Friede matching data are described. The fitted ellipsoids vary in size according to their position in colour space. Various colour matching equations are derived to describe these variations and these are found to give better correlation with visual observation than other colour matching formulae.
