SUMMARY The entire intake into Grade I of a normal primary school, comprising 99 children aged between 6 years 4 months and 7 years 10 months, was studied to assess whether there was any association between minor congenital anomalies and cognitive function. It was found that the number of minor anomalies in any particular child was not related to his performance IQ, motor ability or classroom behaviour, but that there was an inverse relationship with verbal performance. A strong statistical relationship was also found between a high number of anomalies and academic performance, those children with the higher numbers of minor anomalies being much more likely to be among the 15 per cent of children recommended to spend a second year in Grade I. RÉSUMÉ Tout le groupe entrant en cours préparatoire d'une école primaire normale et comprenant quelques anfants âgés de 6 ans et 4 mois à 7 ans 10 mois ont été examinés pour vérifier s'il existait une association entre anomalies congénitales mineures et fonctions cognitives.
