Microfilaments, one of the three major filamentous systems of eukaryotic cells, are involved both in the maintenance of cell shape and also in a variety of motile phenomena. To begin to understand microfilament organizations at the molecular level, one approach is to isolate a defined arrangement and to try to elucidate the role of each component. The detailed information obtained for one system, in our case the cytoskeleton of microvilli of intestinal epithelial-cell brush borders, may then suggest how some other microfilament arrangements are organized and function.
