Two planar inverted-F antennas (PIFAs) operating in the 2.4- and 5-GHz WLAN bands for dual-module application in a laptop computer are presented. The two antennas are printed and integrated on a dielectric substrate and are suitable to be embedded within the casing of a laptop computer as internal antennas. In addition, the two antennas are excited by using two separate feeds with good isolation. This design arrangement makes it very suitable for dual-module application. In this case, no external switching circuit between the antennas and the modules is required, thus leading to a simpler system design, compared to the use of a single-feed dual-band antenna for dual-module application.
