SUMMARY The basal plasma thyrotropin (TSH) level and the thyrotrophin releasing hormone (TRH) induced TSH secretion were measured in euthyroid goitrous subjects and non‐goitrous subjects; both groups lived in a known endemic area under iodide prophylaxis in North India. The results were similar in both groups. Elevated TSH levels are not necessary for goitre maintenance.
