Colchicine has been comn1only used to polyploidize plant inaterial since the importance of this effect was first recognized by Blalieslee and Avery (1937). Only recently has the opposite effect, the diploidization of tetraploid seedlings of sorghum, been observed, also after colchici~le treatment (Sanders and Fraiizlie, 1962 and Chen and Ross, 1963). T o obtain information concerning the manner in the new diploid stem apex arises within the colcl~icine treated coleoptile, a study was made of the nuclear behavior of cells in this region.
