The variation principle in electron-atom scattering is analyzed in an attempt to explain the difficulties encountered in even the simplest e-H expansion type calculations. Different variational methods are compared and an approach is introduced which will eliminate the occurrence of spurious singularities found in other methods. This method is applicable to both elastic and inelastic collisions.
