This paper describes gliding motility, a form of surface-associated translocation characteristic of a variety of bacteria, as well as observations and experimental approaches designed to elucidate the mechanism of gliding and associated movements. In light of the structural diversity of these bacteria at cellular and subcellular levels, there may be multiple mechanisms of gliding.
