Do lipid profile abnormalities differ between male and female patients with type 2 diabetes?
In this small cohort of type 2 diabetes patients, lipid profile abnormalities did not differ significantly between men and women, though women had numerically higher triglycerides.
Diabetes is a chronic & one of the oldest diseases known to all. In diabetes mellitus the glucose is underutilized & those underutilizes glucose is associated with changes of lipid profile. The majority of diabetic people experience dyslipidemia, which is one of the most common diseases. To determine lipid abnormalities associated with diabetes based on each of their sex & also understanding the pattern of dyslipidemia among type 2 diabetic patients. This study was carried out at Savar area from March 2022 2to August 2022 (over a period of 6 months) & enrolled with total 55 populations. For determine diabetes RBS was obtained in this study and sampling data were obtained from Sahara modern hospital (Bogabari, Ashulia), Happy general hospital (Baipail), RM diagnostic center (Jamgora) and Gonosastho medical (Nolam). Patients on thyroid disorder, chronic liver disease & fibrates were excluded from this study. The age ranges of patients were 25-80 years. There are 55 patients included in this study of which 30 were women and 25 were men. In this study blood sugar was higher than normal in both male & female (RBS=10.38 3.62 mmol/L, 10.74 2.84 respectively). The value of RBS was higher in female than male. TG group are slightly more in female than male (191.47±111.97 mg/dl and 153.26±55.18 mg/dl respectively). Total cholesterol and HDL was within normal level in both groups where the level was higher in female than male (TC=184.7±35.45) & 180.25±36.79 mg/dl respectively). The HDL was higher in female than male (HDL=44.84±3.43 & 41.82±7.94) and finally The LDL was higher in male than female (LDL=107.80±31.71 & 101.60±34.44). The change in TG, TC, HDL & LDL was not significant (P>0.685, P>0.38, P>0.16 & P>0.489). Most of people with type 2 diabetes have diabetic dyslipidemia & those patients had a combination of high cholesterol, TG, LDL& low HDL level. High level of TG in combination with low levels of HDL-C showed the strongest association with DM. In this study high level of TG are found in female than male. Overall a greater proportion of women are found dyslipidemic as compared to men.

A 2025 study conducted a cross-sectional in Type 2 diabetes (n=55). Female sex vs. Male sex was evaluated on Lipid profile abnormalities (TG, TC, HDL, LDL) (p=P>0.16 to P>0.685). Female sex was associated with higher triglyceride levels (191.47 vs 153.26 mg/dl) compared to male sex in type 2 diabetes, though overall lipid profile differences were not significant.
