A mass in the thyroid gland of a 4-year-old child was diagnosed by needle biopsy to be an abscess due to a rapidly growing mycobacterium sensitive only to ethionamide. Concomitant appropriate antimicrobial therapy and subtotal excision of diseased tissue resulted in complete recovery.
