The kinetics of recombination reactions in the light of current theory, and a simplified “working” expression for the calculation of effective rate constants of atmospheric recombination reactions as a function of altitude are presented. An application of this expression to the effective atmospheric “fall‐off” behaviour of the reactions OH + NO 2 , OH + NO, OH + SO 2 , ClO + NO 2 and HO 2 + NO 2 is given.
