An improved scintillating medium for radiation dosimetry with energy response varying by less than ± 10 per cent over the energy range 20 keV to 2 MeV has been developed. The medium consists of polystyrene/p-terphenyl/tetraphenylbutadiene plastic containing 1 part in 300 by weight of silver-activated zinc sulphide. The light output of this material compares favourably with that of the pure plastic. The effects of probe dimensions and wall composition on the performance of probe-type dose-rate meters incorporating this material are described.
