ables used represent significant aspects of the social differentiation of modern urban society, we can conclude also that these three factors are necessary to account for the observed social differentiation between subpopulations in Los Angeles and in the San Francisco Bay Region. Since these three dimensions are used as the basic elements in the Shevky-Williams typology, these findings represent a partial validation of the urban social area types constructed by Shevky and Williams. Further validity can be attributed to the typology because the second hypothesis was verified for both urban areas. The indexes selected to measure economic status and family status were shown to be unidimensional measuring instruments.
