QoL assessment in CV patients requires methodological caution; review leaves open consensus on optimal tools for trials.
Cardiovascular therapy and choice of pharmacological strategy is based on the calculated balance between expected effects on the survival of the patient on the one hand, and effects on the patient's symptoms and well-being on the other. In order to understand the effects of treatment on quality of life we must develop responsive, reliable and valid tests to detect clinically relevant changes in well-being in patients before and during treatment. This brief review discusses different methodological problems in quality-of-life measurements, including an overview of different methods for assessment of well-being and subjective symptoms.
