Estradiol enhances endothelial eNOS activity through AMPK activation and HSP90 interaction.
Why the study?
The role of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in estradiol-induced endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) activation and its interaction with heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) was unclear.
AMPK activity is essential for estradiol-induced eNOS activation by promoting the interaction of eNOS with HSP90.

Does not alter estrogen-related vascular management; leaves open AMPK mediation of estradiol-eNOS signaling pending human data.
Schulz et al. (2005) studied this question. Estradiol was evaluated on AMPK activation and eNOS catalytic activity. Estradiol activated AMPK and increased eNOS catalytic activity in endothelial cells, demonstrating that AMPK activity is essential for estradiol-induced eNOS activation via HSP90 interaction.
