Care must be taken to avoid pinching the intra-aortic balloon with artery forceps applied to the dacron graft during insertion to prevent balloon damage.
Risk of balloon damage from artery forceps on dacron graft warrants caution during insertion; this case report leaves open safer procedural modifications.
Damage to an intra-aortic balloon occurred on two occasions in 93 insertion procedures. The complication was recognized before gas embolization occurred, and neither patient suffered ill effects. On both occasions the balloon was holed when pinched by artery forceps applied to the 'dacron' graft.
