An improved method for the analysis of xanthophyll, as well as carotene, is described for fresh alfalfa. This method is also applicable t o low fiber materials such as whole juice and protein-xanthophyll concentrates. T h e method is rapid and gives xanthophyll values which are significantly higher than those by other procedures. Pigmenting xanthophylls are determined as trans-lutein equivalents.
