EXCERPT In 2002, Alcon’s CustomCornea wavefront-guided customized ablation (LASIK) (Alcon Laboratories Inc, Ft Worth, Tex) was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the correction of myopia, together with an overall reduction of aberrations in comparison to conventional treatment. Each year, starting in 2003, we have published an Alcon-sponsored supplement in the Journal of Refractive Surgery, outlining the new developments and FDA approvals received within the current year. This past year, Alcon experienced an FDA recall on the CustomCornea algorithms delivered by the LADAR6000 laser, due to the unexpected formation of steep central islands in a small number of eyes. This produced both a consumer and industry response, leading to an expansion of Alcon’s technology and customer base by the acquisition of WaveLight and the ALLEGRETTO WAVE laser platform.
