Two British geographers survey the state of the natural environment in countries of the CIS on the basis of the latest data available from Goskomstat SNG statistical publications and annual Russian Federation reports on the environment. An initial section outlines problems in data reliability, with subsequent coverage devoted to the general state of the environment, water resources and air pollution more specifically, and the varied character of environmental problems in different CIS countries. Particular attention is devoted to situations in which levels of pollution decline by a lesser order of magnitude than does gross economic output.
