Surgical mitral valve replacement is associated with a significantly higher long-term risk of first-time infective endocarditis compared to mitral valve repair.
Significant MV dysfunction often requires surgical MV repair or surgical MV replacement with a biological or mechanical prosthesis. Over a follow-up of 10 year, first-time IE occurrence was significantly more frequent in patients who had previously undergone MV replacement compared with those who had previously undergone MV repair. After adjustment, these findings remained unchanged. CI, confidence interval; IE, infective endocarditis; HR, hazard ratio; MV, mitral valve.
