By use of the 57Fe Mössbauer effect the axis of easy magnetization in amorphous Fe40Ni40P14B6 (Metglas 2826) between 78 °K and 300 °K is found to lie predominantly in the plane of the ribbon in the zero external field. However, because of the positive magnetostriction of this alloy, it is possible to force the magnetization direction out of the plane by cooling the ribbon to low temperatures after it is sandwiched at room temperature between a material with a higher thermal expansion coefficient.
