In this Centennial Feature Article we outline theoretical efforts in modeling the gas phase reactions along the way to formation of 13−15 binary materials from the donor−acceptor complexes. Recent advances in theoretical studies of structures, stability, and reactivity of 13−15 donor−acceptor complexes, amido and imido compounds, as well as large 13−15 clusters and nanotubes are highlighted. Use of 13−15 compounds as single-source precursors to 13−15 alloys and their potential as hydrogen storage materials are also discussed. We also present directions for further theoretical and experimental studies in this area.
