An experimental investigation of the spatial growth, in cylindrical geometry, of prebreakdown ionization currents in crossed electric and magnetic fields has been made in molecular hydrogen at constant values of E/B ( E is the electric field strength, B is the magnetic induction), and at gas pressures where the electron mean free path is greater than the dimensions of the discharge chamber. The results have been interpreted using a modified `Townsend' type model, and the values of the effective Townsend coefficients so obtained are, when the equivalent pressure concept is invoked, not inconsistent with the results of other, higher-pressure, experiments.
