This report describes EHV-1 infection of 2 horses withneurological disease. One of the horses also had severe en-teritis, with intranuclear inclusions in crypt epithelial cells. The diagnosis was confirmed using monoclonal antibodies.DNA analysis by restriction endonuclease digestion showedthat isolates from the 2 horses were identical, with restrictionenzyme patterns similar to that of the type strain KentuckyD. Similar destruction of ileal cryptal epithelial cells withinfection of submucosal lymphocytes has been previouslyreported in 2-week-old foals, following experimental infec-tion with both EHV-1 paretic and abortion isolates.
