The authors discuss the manual production of a contiguous isodensity map or area cartogram. Three aspects of the isodensity mapping problem were found to have a considerable bearing on both the viability of a manual solution and on the readability of the final map. These included the selection of a hierarchy of shape priorities to enhance readability, the determination of a plottable error for areas to decrease production time, and the actual construction procedure used.
