HeLa, HEp-2, KB, and WI-38 tissue culture cells showed various degrees of cytotoxicity when exposed to heat-inactivated human sera. Most of the cytotoxicity was not in the ammonium sulfate-precipitated serum fractions, but migrated during preparative electrophoresis in the prealbumin area. Examination of the active fraction by curtain and disc electrophoresis and by microimmunodiffusion tests showed the presence of prealbumin.
