Signals can be contaminated by other signals and images can be contaminated by other images. This contamination is called crosstalk. An everyday example in our profession is the mixing of pressure and shear waves. For waves coming straight up, vertical phones measure pressure waves and horizontal phones measure shear waves. Often, however, the waves are not coming exactly straight up, so the simple idealization is contaminated and we have crosstalk.
