Breeding populations of Amietia wittei were discovered near 4000 m on Mount Kilimanjaro. They occurred in two streams out of four. Their identification was confirmed by DNA sequencing. Adults, eggs and tadpoles were present. Reasons why they do not occur above 4000 m are discussed, including the observation of egg clutches that failed to develop. This discovery represents the highest known record of a breeding population of river frogs in Africa.
