The comparative interaction of Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ counterions on carboxyl groups of polygalacturonic acid is developed. Ultracentrifugation, conductimetry, potentiometry, and CD were used in this work. Evidence is provided for a simple electrostatic interaction of Mg 2+ counterions; on the opposite side, cooperative interaction of Ca 2+ counterions is again demonstrated, causing chain–chain association.
