Males of Tetranychus urticae Koch are attracted strongly to pharate females. The male “guards” the pharate female until emergence, when mating occurs. Thin layer chromatography (TLC), gas liquid chromatography (GLC) and mass spectrometric analysis of the crude ether extracts of pharate females revealed the presence of the sesquiterpene alcohol nerolidol, and the monoterpene alcohol geraniol in addition to the sesquiterpene alcohol farnesol previously described. Bioassays revealed that males were attracted to 10 ppm synthetic nerolidol, but not to 100 ppm nerolidol. Geraniol did not attract males.
