A new kieselguhr‐supported carboxymethylcellulose‐nickel complex (Kie‐CMC‐Ni) has been prepared by a simple method, which has been found to catalyze the hydrogenation of benzaldehyde, valeraldehyde and isobutyraldehyde to the corresponding alcohols in high yield (100, 92 and 86% respectively). The catalyst could be reused without obvious loss of its catalytic activity.
