Investigation of the latitudinal variation of observed rainfall magnitudes for specific areas and durations in over 300 major storms reveals a remarkably consistent latitudinal location of the peak magnitudes at about 30°–31°N, abrupt declines south of the peaks and uniform variations to the north. The effect on these variations of relative opportunities for rainfall measurement and major‐storm occurrence is discussed and possible dynamic causes for the observed variations are briefly outlined.
