High performances for 1.5 mu m butt-jointed distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser are demonstrated. High output power (>20 mW) and narrow spectral linewidth (600 kHz) were obtained. By controlling the device parameters, the linewidth was reduced, and a minimum linewidth of 450 kHz was observed. The limiting factors of the linewidth reduction are discussed. Frequency modulation (FM) response characteristics were investigated for two-active-action DBR lasers. It is shown that the sectional active layer is effective in obtaining the same FM response under wavelength tuning conditions.>
