A laboratory plasma of density of the order of 3*10 12 electrons/m 3 , electron temperature 0.15 eV mean free paths greater than 1 m, and which was designed to simulate the ionospheric plasma, is described. The plasma is formed by neutralizing an ion beam with electrons, the ions and electrons being produced from separate thermionic sources. Typical results obtained with a single electrode probe are interpreted by the standard Langmuir procedure, and show that the measured density agrees with the measured plasma frequency from measurements of the admittance of a parallel grid capacitor. The plasma is undisturbed by the application of a magnetic field, and is compared with the ionospheric plasma.
