Double contrast arthrography can be utilized to assess the anatomic shape and movement of the lateral meniscus. The area of primary importance appears to be where the popliteus bursa crosses the posterior meniscus. Pathological conditions such as peripheral separation of the meniscus, cystic degeneration of the meniscus and the discoid lateral meniscus have characteristic radiographic findings involving the meniscus posteriorly at either its peripheral or central attachments.
