What aspects of the relationship between therapist and client help to determine whether the outcome will be successful? What progress is being made in assessing the outcomes of individual psychotherapy and of behavior therapy? In considering these and related main questions, we have chosen to review research on individual psychotherapy separately from work on behavior therapy, since the scope of inter ventions and the empirical approaches in these two fields have been substantially different in 1974-76. Gomes-Schwartz devoted her attention primarily to the topic of traditional individual psychotherapy, and Hadley to behavioral interventions. In spite of the separation between the fields, we note areas of rapprochement, and we comment on the cognitive revolution in behavior therapy.
